The Glade Trail

The SMV hiking trail is officially open for spring bookings beginning April 10

Tucked within the rolling landscape of Southwest Mountains Vineyards, The Glade Trail offers a new way to experience one of the most scenic wineries near Charlottesville, Virginia.

This outdoor experience combines a peaceful vineyard hike with thoughtful hospitality—complete with a private setup of wine and lunch waiting for you in the glade. Whether you're planning a weekend outing from Charlottesville, a day trip from Richmond, or a getaway from Northern Virginia, The Glade is designed to slow things down and bring you closer to the land.

This is a paid experience and must be booked in advance through our website.

What to expect:

  • A 2-mile out-and-back hiking trail through the SMV estate

  • Optional extension to explore historic property ruins

FAQ's

  • The trail is approximately 2 miles round trip, with an optional extension to explore additional areas of the property.

  • Yes, The Glade is a paid, reservation-only experience that must be booked in advance.  Tickets are $35 per person. Fore those under 21, we have $15 tickets available.

  • Each booking includes access to the trail, a reserved glade setup, lunch, and a bottle of wine (one bottle for every two people).

  • The standard experience is self-guided, but we offer select guided “Guest Star Hikes” throughout the season.

  • The trail is moderate and accessible for most guests with a 650ft elevation on the way up. We recommend comfortable walking shoes.

Location & Access

Southwest Mountains Vineyards is located in Keswick, Virginia, just outside Charlottesville in the heart of the Monticello AVA.
 
Driving distances:

  • 20 minutes from Charlottesville

  • 1 hour from Richmond

  • 2–2.5 hours from Washington, DC / Northern Virginia

Nestled in the Monticello AVA near Keswick, Virginia, our vineyards benefit from elevation, mountain breezes, and diverse soils that create natural balance in the vines. Warm days encourage ripeness and concentration, while cool evenings preserve acidity and structure.

Every block is farmed with meticulous care. Vineyard practices are deliberate and measured, focused on producing fruit of clarity and character rather than volume. The goal is simple: allow the terroir — the singular combination of soil, climate, and topography — to speak with authenticity in every vintage.
